Wedding Dresses: Shopping Tips & Trends From Taffeta & Tulle

We are so excited to bring you this new series on the blog - local Calgary wedding business features! About once a month, we are going to interview vendors that we love and share their best Calgary wedding and elopement planning advice for you. I could not be more excited to start with Taffeta & Tulle - where I purchased my own custom wedding dress for my elopement a few months ago (which you can read more about here). And for those wondering - YES, they do carry full figure gowns! I do love an inclusive company.

Wedding Dress Trends in 2021

  • Trending Fabrics for Wedding Dresses are Jersey Satin, 3D floral appliqué lace

  • Colour: Under-colors in bridal gowns have become exceptionally popular. I am a huge fan because I love how much it makes the lace details pop! Oyster and mocha are the most popular colours at Taffeta & Tulle! We will also be carrying grey, blue and almond starting in March.

  • Full bishops sleeves: This is one of my favourite trends. I love when old fashion comes back around full circle. The bishop sleeves are so classic and a beautiful feature that you can easily wear in both summer or winter.

  • Low backs: Everyone loves a low back on a wedding gown. It is so elegant with a little bit of spice!

  • Off the shoulder straps: There is something about off the shoulder straps that make a bride and a wedding gown look so feminine. Having the option to detach an off the shoulder sleeve on a strapless gown is a unique touch that creates to different looks in one dress!

  • Slit in skirt: Show the leg, girl! A slit in a skirt, especially when you are a vertically challenged individual like myself really helps elongate the body.

  • LACE FOREVER: I am so happy to see that lace is continuing to trend. All of the different types of lace are so delicate and beautiful. There is chantilly lace, appliqué lace, 3D floral lace... So many different options to help each bride feel unique and embrace their own personal fashion sense!

10 Tips For Wedding Dress Shopping

  1. It is always helpful to start looking at styles and fabrics online to help get an idea before going to try dresses on. It also helps the consultant if you bring some images of your preferences to the appointment.

  2. Be open minded! More often than not, my brides end up choosing a dress they NEVER expected they would like.

  3. Sometimes, having a lot of guests to your bridal appointments can be overwhelming and too many opinions for the bride. Only bring guests to your bridal appointment that are going to make you feel good! You should ALWAYS feel beautiful and confident when you are trying on wedding dresses. If you don’t, something is wrong!

  4. It is important to know that bridal gowns go up two sizes from what you would typically wear street size.

  5. Try to remember to wear nude, seamless underwear to your bridal appointment. There are a few dress fabrics that may show your underwear.

  6. Make sure you have eaten and had something to drink before your bridal appointment! This is for a few reasons: You don’t want to be light-headed and you also want your body to feel ‘normal’ for doing any measurements that you may be needing done at the appointment.

  7. Trust your gut! And trust yourself! Some brides need a day or two to think about their decision. Some brides can make a decision on the spot!

  8. A bride should limit herself to two bridal store appointments a day. Anything more than that can lead a bride to feeling overwhelmed and even forgetting what she tried on!

  9. The most versatile dress style/fit that is flattering on most body types would be A-line silhouette. A-line works for most figures because it accents your shape, but also helps create flattering lines on a more shapeless body type.

  10. You should not need to wear a bra in your bridal gown as long as you have quality boning and lining in your gown. You should have enough support without a bra.

BONUS: Make sure to stop by Taffeta & Tulle for your wedding dress. I like to believe that majority of my gowns are reasonably priced in the bridal world. It is important to have an open mind with your budget when dress shopping. With that said, my dresses range in price from $500 to $2,000. If you have a budget of $1500 to $2000, you have a full selection of gowns to choose from.

Custom Wedding Dresses and Alterations

At Taffeta & Tulle Bridal, I specialize in helping my brides customize their dream wedding dress! Customizing may include custom measurements and any sort of unique detail changes to the dress. We can customize any dresses that are in stock. In terms of alterations, depending on what is needed to be done can vary greatly. I always give my brides a general idea on what to budget for alterations once they have chosen their dress. Most of my gowns also include custom measurements to avoid spending a large amount on trying to get it to fit.

For my brides that struggle to find a one of a kind dress that fits their personality (Ex: Black, Pink, Camouflage print, etc.), I also offer a custom gown package. Custom Wedding Dress designing includes a consult, a printed sketch of your dress, fittings and custom sewing. This is something you are going to want to book sooner rather than later - I only take on 4-6 custom gown packages per year.
