7 Ideas for a Surprise Proposal

Proposing to the love of your life is a momentous occasion that requires careful planning and consideration. It's the moment you declare your love and commitment to one another, and it's a memory that will last a lifetime. While there are countless ways to pop the question, a surprise wedding proposal can be a truly special way to create a magical moment.

We, at Fly Free Photography, enjoy taking engagement photos in Calgary and the surrounding area because of its stunning natural landscape, unique urban settings, and friendly community. Whether you're looking for a romantic and timeless backdrop or a modern and edgy feel, Calgary has something to offer you. I’d love to chat with you more about your vision here.

I am so stoked to share with you some ideas for a surprise proposal that you can pull off (and include your family members, too!).

Surprise Proposal Ideas

1. Book a candlelit dinner at the Calgary Tower.

The Calgary Tower is an iconic landmark in the city, and it offers breathtaking views of the city skyline. You can book a private table at the Calgary Tower's revolving restaurant, which offers stunning panoramic views of the city. After enjoying a romantic candlelit dinner, you can propose to your partner while admiring the gorgeous views of the city below.

2. Visit a local vineyard.

Calgary's surrounding region is known for its vineyards and wineries, and a visit to one of these locations could make for a romantic proposal. Plan a day trip to a local vineyard and enjoy a tasting and a tour of the property. Find a quiet spot among the vines and propose as you enjoy a glass of wine together.

3. Have a photo shoot.

A photo shoot is a great way to capture memories and create beautiful images that you can cherish for years to come. You could plan a photo shoot for your partner and then surprise them with a proposal during the shoot. This is a great way to create a lasting memory of your engagement and the excitement of the moment.

4. Book a helicopter tour.

Take your proposal to new heights with a helicopter tour over the city. As you fly over the city's landmarks and scenic spots, seize the opportunity to propose to your partner with the stunning views below. This unique and romantic experience will be a moment that you both will never forget. You can also book a tour with one of our favorite companies - Rockies Heli Canada and end up landing at a scenic mountain view and pop the question on the ground, at the top of a mountain. I HIGHLY recommend bringing a photographer along for this! ( Oh Heyyyyy! )

5. Propose on a ski hill.

If you and your partner love to hit the slopes, consider proposing on one of the many ski hills around Calgary. Take a break from skiing or snowboarding and find a quiet spot with a view. Get down on one knee and ask the question with the mountains as your witness.

Surprise Proposal Ideas with Family

6. Plan a scavenger hunt.

If your partner loves puzzles and games, a scavenger hunt proposal could be the perfect way to surprise them. You can also include your family in the planning! Create a series of clues that lead your partner to different locations, where they will find small gifts and mementos. The final clue should lead them to you, where you will be waiting with a ring and a heartfelt proposal.

7. Take a scenic hike.

Since Calgary is surrounded by a lot of scenic hiking trails in the Rocky Mountains, you could plan a hike with your partner and pack a picnic with all of their favorite foods and drinks. You can even bring your family to witness your surprise, or do it solo. Find a beautiful spot with a view, and propose as you enjoy your time together. It will be a moment that you will both never forget.

Are Proposals Supposed to be A Surprise

Proposals are one of the most exciting and meaningful moments in a person's life. Whether it's a surprise or not, it's an event that will be remembered for a lifetime. But the question remains: are proposals supposed to be a surprise?

The answer is not a simple one, as it depends on various factors. Some couples may prefer the traditional surprise proposal, where you plan and execute the proposal without the knowledge of your partner. This can be a romantic and exciting gesture, as you plan the proposal down to the last detail, creating a special moment that will be cherished forever.

On the other hand, some couples may prefer a more collaborative approach, where they discuss and plan the wedding together without there actually even being a proposal. This can be a more practical approach for couples who prefer to make important decisions together and may be more comfortable with a joint effort, or if an engagement just isn't their jam.

Proposals can be a surprise or not, depending on the preferences of the couple. The most important thing is to create a meaningful and memorable moment that reflects the love and commitment of both partners. Whether the proposal is a complete surprise or a joint effort, the result is the same: two people committing to a lifetime of love and happiness together.
